Change theories are used in nursing to bring about a planned change. A planned change “involves recognizing a problem and creating a plan to address it.” (http://www.docstoc.com) There are several known theorists, all of whom have created change theories. Reddin, Rogers, Havelock, and Lippitt all created change theories used in nursing. Kurt Lewin’s Change Theory is the most widely used change theory model. All have incorporated Lewin’s three stage theory and have expanded it by adding additional stages as they saw fit to their theory. The chart below (Figure 11-1) shows a displayed comparison of change theories as designed by the above mentioned theorists. This chart can be used by nurse educators when deciding which change theory would best suit their needs in order for a particular identified change to take place within their organization.
